Beavers go undefeated, take top seed

Jul 24, 2016 | 10:43 AM

Home field advantage reigned supreme in North Battleford over the weekend.

The city is playing host to the Midget AA Tier One Provincial Championships, where the home town Beavers head into the elimination round as the first seed. North Battleford went undefeated in their three preliminary games.

Beavers Coach Mike Hudec said he is happy about going undefeated but admitted it wasn’t a cake a walk.

“We had late heroics in our last two games but that’s the type of team we’ve been all season.  We don’t quit and we just keep playing hard. There’s always a good spirit on the bench, even if we’re down a few runs.” Hudec said.

The “late game heroics” came off the bat of shortstop Gavin Knowlen against the Humbolt Dodgers Saturday, July 23. He hit a double to left field with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, bringing home three runs to break a four-run tie and take the lead. A lead the beavers didn’t relinquish.

“We’ve been waiting for provincials all year,” Knowlen said. “Playing on our home field is really special and motivates us. I was really frustrated earlier in the game and the coaches had to calm me down. The third base coach told me to just sit in the box and wait for my pitch. When I got it I saw it and I drove it.”

The Beavers will play the fourth seeded Lumsden Cubs in the semi-finals at noon at Beaver Lions Stadium Sunday, July 24. North Battleford beat Lumsden 7-5 on Saturday. The other semi-final will be between the Humbolt Dodgers and the Moose Jaw Canucks at noon on diamond two.

The winners of each game will play in the finals at 3 p.m. at Beaver Lions Stadium.
