Battleford parade brings out beautiful displays of regional pride

Jul 16, 2016 | 9:02 AM

The annual Battleford Parade was held in the town of Battleford and it seemed like the kickoff to summer.

An impressive array of floats and vehicles made their way down the town streets at 8 p.m.on Friday, July 15, starting at St. Vital School where it made the rounds around town, passing Centennial Park before returning back to the St. Vital track at 9 p.m.

Though the lineup was smaller than the year before, over 40 entries made their way on the main street for the colourful march.

Over two hundred people turned out with their lawn chairs to grab a front row seat as the parade vehicles, floats and horses waded through town. Onlookers caught waves from float participants, as well as flying freezies, suckers and promotional t-shirts.

Elaborately decorated floats included submissions from the Battleford Co-op, the Battleford Blues Hockey team, a lineup of vintage vehicles from the Fred Light Museum, as well as MLA Herb Cox riding his prized show pony.

MLA Randy Weekes also made an appearance, as did Battleford mayor, Derek Mahon in the back of a vintage fire truck.  North Battleford mayor, Ian Hamilton also strode down Main St. behind the wheel of a shiny vintage kit car.

Other parade highlights included teams of beautiful horses pulling vintage buggies and the Gold Eagle Casino’s confetti Canyon.
