Family renews call for accused baby killer to face adult court

Jul 11, 2016 | 3:01 PM

The great-grandmother of an infant boy who was allegedly murdered last week wants the girl accused of the crime tried as an adult.

Police claim the 16-year-old girl, who can’t be named due to her age, killed six-week-old Nikosis Jace Cantre on July 3.

The teen is charged with second-degree murder, along with breaching three youth court orders stemming from previous convictions. She made a brief appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court by video link on Monday.

Eva Meechance, Cantre’s great-grandmother, spoke to reporters outside the courthouse. She said she wanted to see the girl face charges in adult court.

“She hurt my great-grandson, and I don’t like that. It hurts right here in my heart,” she said.

Last week, other relatives claimed Cantre was found beaten to death in his playpen.

“I wanted her to go to jail for life. The way she do to my grandson. (She’s) not supposed to do that to a baby. She should know better than that,” Meechance said.

The girl is set to appear in court again by video on July 18.
