Funnel clouds spotted in Saskatoon and near the Battlefords

Jul 11, 2016 | 7:26 AM

A storm cell moving through the region brought funnel clouds Sunday.

In Saskatoon, a funnel cloud was seen around just after 6 p.m. by Deb Andersof, who described what she saw to News Talk Radio.

“The spout is getting smaller but it’s just over, I’d say…over Evergreen area you can see the spout cloud,” she said.

Environment Canada confirmed the sighting as a specific type of cloud known as a “cold core funnel.”

“They generally don’t develop into tornadoes…usually they’re brought on by severe thunderstorms,” meteorologist Brad Vrolijk said.

Funnel clouds were also seen in and around the BattlefordsSunday afternoon.

Vrolijk said once thunderstorms hit, the funnel clouds typically dissipate.
