Local dentist mocks vandals in surveillance video

Jun 15, 2016 | 7:51 PM

A video of two people vandalizing a business property has blown up on Facebook.

The recording shows two individuals destroying flowers outside of Rayburn Dental Studio in North Battleford on Monday night.

The two knew they were being recorded and played to their audience, waving and at one point flipping off the camera.

“When I saw the video I felt angry and I could feel it welling up inside of me,” Sherry Rayburn, owner of the studio, said. “They more I watched it, the more I felt something had to be done. The anger turned into a desire to get it out there and show these kids that the community really does care.”

The video has reached 19,000 views and 253 shares on Facebook.

“The reception has been really positive, except the kids who did it decided to comment. That bothered me,” Rayburn said. “People seem to care about their community and they care about how things look. I think that’s why they outed these two on Facebook and posted their names.”

Rayburn is known around town for the floral arrangements outside her building during the summer and the decorations she puts up for Halloween and Christmas.

“It’s just sad because I would do a heck of a lot more if I felt safe doing it. It’s individuals like these that make me feel unsafe,” Rayburn said. “I have such a decorating spirit, I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I think I need therapy. It gives me such a magical feeling like I’m a child again.”

This isn’t the first time Rayburn has experienced vandalism. She has surveillance footage of two men tearing the lights off her plants and walking home with them last Christmas.

Rayburn didn’t go to the RCMP over Monday’s incident because the damage was so minimal. She said she contacted them about previous incidents but nothing transpired from the calls. She doesn’t blame the RCMP, she said, adding she knows they have bigger cases do deal with.
