UPDATE: No fundraiser necessary for injured Battlefords man

Jun 14, 2016 | 11:49 AM

UPDATE: It’s been decided no fundraiser is needed for a man severely injured in an ATV accident almost two months ago. Jody Kowerchuk’s family said they’re grateful for all the support since his accident and he’s recovering much quicker than expected.

Family friend Laurie Query said the planned supper event has been cancelled. However, the already completed fundraising, including bake sales and 50/50 tickets, will go to Kowerchuk and his family, and is very appreciated.

Kowerchuk broke six vertebrae between his neck and lower back in an ATV accident while helping set up for the rodeo in April.

His wife Michelle Kowerchuk said in an email he’s had surgery to fuse the t7 through t11 vertebrae and is now able to take his neck brace off for periods of time during the day. The couple were told Jody is healing nicely and will start physiotherapy in six weeks.

Query said Kowerchuk’s step-children have been helping the family since the accident, with his stepson even coming from Australia to help.

“Jody, he’s awesome, he’s a very giving person,” she said. “He was absolutely fantastic with (his step-children) growing up. He was there for them all the time and still is and they’re grown now.”

A GoFundMe page set up by a colleague for Kowerchuk, unrelated to the cancelled fundraiser, has raised more than $11,000.

–Editor’s Note: This story was changed June 17 after the fundraiser was cancelled.
