North Stars roster pumped up by Prince George forward

The Battlefords North Stars have added what they hope is an offensive catalyst to their lineup for the 2016-17 season.

They acquired Prince George Spruce Kings forward Connor Logan, a 19-year-old Victoria native who scored nine goals and 10 assists last season.

It was his first full year of Junior A hockey, having spent the previous three playing Junior B in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL). He also suited up for 10 games with the British Columbia Hockey League’s Powell River Kings in 2014-15.

North Stars head coach and general manager Kevin Hasselberg jumped at the opportunity to pick up Logan when he became available.

“He was a player we tried to recruit during his final years of midget and early junior days,” Hasselberg said. “He’s an honest player, he loves the game and he’s a good person.”

Though Logan’s offensive numbers with the Spruce Kings are not eye popping, during his Junior B days he was a regular contributor with the Peninsula Panthers and Campbell River Storm.

In the 2013-14 season he finished second in league scoring with 75 points in 48 games for the Panthers, far and away their lead scorer.

The following season he was traded to the Storm and finished fourth in team scoring, landing 60 points despite playing in just 36 games. He then added another 12 points in 13 playoff games as the Storm won the league championship.

He also helped guide the Storm to wins in the British Columbia and Western Canada Junior B championships.

“We’re going to throw him right into the fire,” Hasselberg said. “I think he’s going to be a capable top-six player that will complement other players in our program. We’re confident he’ll come in and earn the respect of players who have put in a lot of time with our program.”

Born in 1996, Logan is entering his final year of junior eligibility. CJHL teams can carry a maximum of eight players who are in their final year of junior, and Logan’s addition puts the North Stars at six.

Hasselberg said age isn’t a determining factor for who he adds to his team and also hinted he isn’t done adding to his team.

“It’s that time of the year when teams are going to start carving out their rosters and make players available,” he said. “I think it’s important we stay on top of that and catch any rumours before they become reality and make sure we’re a part of that process.”
