Local woman supports victims of Fort McMurray

May 9, 2016 | 8:51 AM

After losing her own home in a fire, a North Battleford woman has vowed to help the people of Fort McMurray.

Allison Johnson organized a truck to come from Lloydminster to North Battleford and accept donations for the people in the northern Alberta city who’ve lost so much.

“I had a chimney fire 10 years ago and the whole place burnt to the ground,” Johnson said. “I have a great deal of compassion for the people of Fort Mac and couldn’t just sit around and not do anything.”

There were seven people in Johnson’s house when it caught fire, luckily all were able to escape. Her family lost everything including their three pets.

The 53-foot trailer will arrive in North Battleford at noon Monday, May 9 in the Shine Your Ride parking lot and will take donations until late into the next day.

Johnson is accepting living essentials like food, water and toiletries. She will not accept anything used or “something you would find in a thrift shop.” For a full list of the items you can donate visit her Facebook page

Roughly 80,000 people have been forced from their Fort McMurray homes after a mandatory evacuation was ordered earlier last week. By last count, the wildfires had consumed over 160,000 hectares of land or a space twice the size of Calgary.
