Annual Battlefords smoker in jeopardy

Apr 24, 2016 | 4:21 PM

The Battlefords Wildlife Federations annual Smoker has been going on for 71 years but this could be the last time the grills are lit.

“We’re trying to stay alive right now,” Battlefords Wildlife Federation president Daniel Delainey said. “We’re suffering, the economy hurts. We might have to drop things like the Smoker. It’s a big, big job so we might have to move back to fish fries and smaller things.”

Delainey hoped to get 800-1000 people out Saturday April. 23. “In all honesty anything over breaking even would be nice. We’d like to get 10 to 20 thousand dollars. We have expenses and to keep those programs going we need events like this to be successful.”

The Smoker at the Civic Centre in North Battelford, had more than just food. There were woodchuck competitions like fastest person to saw through a log and hammer a nail into a log, as well as kids activities such as laser tag, fishing and hunting simulators.
