Massive fire on Saskatoon’s west side

Apr 19, 2016 | 8:04 PM

An industrial fire at a Saskatoon auto wrecking yard was resposnible causing heavy plumes of black smoke to be seen across the city Tuesday night and as far away as Warman.

“The smoke got bigger and bigger, obviously more cars were catching on and then everything just started happening … and then it was just huge,” said Pat Dubets, who lives next door to AJ’s Salvage.

The Saskatoon Fire Department was fighting the blaze on the ground and with their aerial unit.

The fire department said they were initially called out for a car fire.

Saskatoon’s assistant fire chief, Dave Bykowy, said there were about 100 cars burning, stacked five high which is adding to vertical height of the fire.

The cars were prepared to be crushed; this means there was no gas, or other flammable fluids inside them, he said.

Police received the call just after 5:30 p.m. According to police witnesses reported seeing young kids in the area lighting tires on fire.

Officers now have two kids in custody at this point and the investigation and firefighting efforts are ongoing.
