Mayor hopes to see rink open for next hockey season

It’s been challenging for the Wilkie, Saskatchewan community to have its ice rink closed, Wilkie’s mayor David Ziegler said. The rink closed after an electrical fire in Oct. 2015 caused extensive damage.

Currently there is no fixed date for completion of the restoration. “We’re hoping that it’ll be ready for the new season, but, I guess we’ll see how things progress in the next couple of weeks,” Ziegler said.

The affected steel structure has been fixed, and damaged insulation should be replaced in the coming weeks.

There will be minimal changes to the previous floorplan. The kitchen and the curling barroom will receive slight upgrades and change rooms being added. According to Ziegler it adds up to a “a few walls moved around” on the inside.
