Shot in the face and found on a door step, one stray dog can expect a long road to recovery.

The dog, Remington, arrived at a home north of Glaslyn and was brought to the Battleford’s Humane Society Wednesday, March. 2. It is unknown where he came from or even when he was shot.

“We’re rooting for him. He’s got a long road ahead of him. Probably about two months of medical care. His face is looking pretty bad. He has a big hole in his cheek and a big hole in his shoulder,” Michelle Spark director of the North Battleford humane society said of his recovery.

On top of those injuries, Remington has close to 100 bullet fragments throughout his body. He has been taken to Lakeland Veterinary Clinic for surgery.

“They removed some of the fragments yesterday and they’ll remove more tomorrow,” Spark said. “He’s not the first shot dog and he won’t be the last.”

Spark said that if dogs roam into a farmer’s yard, or chase livestock, it’s not uncommon for them to get shot. She thought the dog could have been mistaken for a coyote.

“9 times out of 10 it’s not a malicious reason. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Judging by how skinny Remington was and the lack of a collar or chip, Spark believed he was a stray just looking for food.

The vet bills are expected to be steep and the Humane Society is asking anyone who wants to help out Remington to call the shelter. Spark is hoping he’ll be ready for adoption in a couple of months.
