Northwest Territorial Days Parade brings community together

The streets of North Battleford were alive Tuesday night with music, artwork, joy, and celebration for the Battlefords Ag. Society’s 2022 Northwest Territorial Days Parade of Champions.

Kicking off at 7 p.m., and running well into the evening, the parade featured everything from horseback riding and live music, to fire trucks, gymnastics, demo cars and inflatable dinosaurs, as families from across the community came out to take in the spectacle.

“I think it was just fabulous; I haven’t been to a parade in years and years so it was just a lot of fun and it had a lot of diverse floats,” local, Loraine Johnson, said while taking in the sights with friends and family.

Taylor Trach was also among those taking in the night’s event with his family, an annual occasion he said they were happy to be able to see return this year.

“It’s tradition,” Trach remarked. “The last couple of years it wasn’t happening, so it was good to be back and have it back in the community. My little guy is on the Battlefords Gymnastics [float] and he saw some of his friends, so he was excited.”

Asked if the candy bag he was holding was for the kids or himself, Trach just laughed.

“It’s a dad tax,” he said with a wink.

Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation was present with a few float entries in this year’s event, including a health float which was awarded the president’s choice award, and a band office float which took home a second place ribbon, along with an economic development float, and relay horses or mini ponies as well.

Coun. Celest Sanders Moosomin said it was a true team effort to put it all together, with a number of the nation’s youth on hand as well to perform or wave from the floats, and be part of the festivities.

“We had different ideas, but we all came together and made it happen,” Sanders Moosomin said. “Our community is huge and we just wanted to pull together and show our spirit in the North Battleford parade.”

Melodie Chaing, who helped organize the Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre float, decorated fully with balloons, streamers and signs, said the parade served as a great way to showcase the diversity of the community.

“We’re so happy and proud and excited to be part of the annual parade and we’re welcoming a lot of newcomer families from Ukraine and all over the world, so we’re especially proud to showcase that diversity and inclusivity,” she said with a smile.

The Northwest Territorial Days Parade served as a kickoff to the annual Territorial Days Exhibition, which opened Wednesday, Aug. 17, and will run to this Friday, Aug. 19, at the North Battleford Exhibition Grounds.
