Two people dead following two-vehicle collision in North Battleford

Two people were killed in a collision Tuesday night in North Battleford.

Battlefords RCMP was called to the scene around 9:00 p.m. on Territorial Drive between the 8 Avenue and 13 Avenue intersection on the east side of the city.

A black Dodge SX was driving southbound and reportedly crossed the highway into oncoming traffic. One northbound vehicle was able to swerve and avoid the collision, before the Dodge SX and a northbound Chevrolet Trailblazer hit head-on.

The four occupants of the Trailblazer suffered only minor injuries and were able to walk away from the collision, while a 53-year-old woman in the SX was declared deceased at the scene and a 56-year-old man was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The 56-year-old driver was airlifted to Saskatoon by STARS Air Ambulance and is being treated for serious injuries.

Traffic was restricted in the area for several hours in order for the investigation to take place.

While the cause of the collision remains under investigation, police said alcohol may have been a factor.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the detachment will need the report from the traffic collision analyst, as well as get statements from the occupants from the Trailblazer, before making any determinations.

“There’s other avenues we have to take before we can make any decision on even whether charges will be pursued,” he said.

As of Wednesday morning, Tremblay said they have not received an update on the driver.

The intersection has been cleared and there are no more traffic delays or restrictions.
