RCMP Report: North Battleford resident wanted for assault

Nov 10, 2021 | 1:13 PM

Battlefords RCMP are searching for a 41-year-old male in North Battleford following a reported assault on Tuesday morning.

Following the call, police attended a residence on St. Laurent Drive, where a female victim had sustained minor injuries but had been able to escape the residence. Upon police arrival, the suspect, Shayler Higgs of North Battleford, had fled. The two were reportedly known to each other and Higgs was known to police.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said they have charged him with one count of assault.

“He’s currently on warrant status and we’re still trying to locate him,” Tremblay said.

The detachment dealt with 18 assault investigations in total, including one case where a woman at a residence on the 1200 block of 108th Street had called police, stating that her son was being assaulted in a dangerous place. The incident was taking place in her home between her two adult sons. A 25-year-old male was taken to hospital and treated for injuries. No persons on scene cooperated with the investigation and no charges are being pursued without that cooperation.

Break-in suspect arrested

A 26-year-old male was arrested on the evening of Nov. 4 and faces multiple charges following and attempted break-in on the 2000 block of 100th Street.

Police heard a suspicious male was near a business on that street and was appearing to be attempting to gain entry. The following day, Eugene Bear of North Battleford appeared in court on charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of break and enter tools, carrying a concealed weapon and failing to comply with a release order. He also faces several other outstanding warrants.

There was another attempted break and enter to a business in the past week, this one occurring on the 700 block of 102nd Street in North Battleford. A suspect was observed attempting to kick in a window, but no entry was gained and a subsequent search was not successful.

Tremblay said it’s too early to tell if either incident has connections to other break-ins this year.

“Because there’s some businesses and there’s potential linkage, we’re keeping all possibilities open,” he said. “But right now [Bear] is only being charged with the one incident where he was arrested on Nov. 4.”

There were 10 break and enter investigations in total over the past seven days.

Other calls

Among the 464 calls for service this past week, Battlefords RCMP had 15 Mental Health Act investigations, eight traffic collisions, two individuals charged with impaired driving offences, 42 Various Traffic Charges and eight vehicle thefts. One such theft includes a 2015 Black Dodge Ram (Saskatchewan license 502-LKP) reported stolen from the 800 block of 112th Street in North Battleford on Nov. 3. Police also have one active missing person’s case for 14-year-old Josaiha Checkosis.

Anyone with information on any incident can call the detachment, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
